The Story
Following is a brief summary of the history of Rubi-Ka, dating from the first humans arrived on Rubi-Ka in 28702, to the opening of the Jobe portal to Shadowlands to the public in 29477. If you wish to delve into the history in more detail, have a look at the Rubi-Ka Timeline.
Note that the Anarchy Online year follows the real year, though the story of Rubi-Ka happens 27474 years into the future. Omni-Tek lifting the colonisation restrictions in 29475 happened on the Anarchy Online launch date, June 26t 2001. The events in the timeline after June 26 29475 have actually happened in the game.
Planetfall
The year is 28702. The first two human manned vessels - "Atlantean" and "Rimor" - touches down on the desert planet Rubi-Ka, commissioned by the Omni-Tek Corporation. After initial tests, Omni-Tek submits an application for lease of the planet to the Interstellar Confederation of Corporations (ICC).
Three weeks after planetfall, all contact with Rimor is lost. Atlantean goes silent two weeks later. Upon reaching planet orbit, the Omni-Tek colonisation ship "Behemoth" re-establishes contact with Atlantean after two months of silence. Upon departing Rubi-Ka the day after, Atlantean blows up. There are no survivors.
Discoveries
Omni-Tek colonises Rubi-Ka, and attains a lease of the planet from the Interstellar Confederation of Corporations (ICC). In 28715 they announce the discovery of notum, a new element that exists in natural form only on Rubi-Ka, which becomes the basis for revolutionary development within nanotechnology. Omni-Tek is suspected to have known of the existence of notum before the lease was signed, and kept the information hidden from the public.
The Behemoth leaves Rubi-Ka in 28721, and is lost in hyperspace. It reappears through a wormhole thirty-seven years later, completely empty, and with internal clocks thirty-seven years behind current time.
Over the next centuries, a new technology of cloning living beings at their moment of death is developed, effectively cheating death. but it works only on Rubi-Ka, the planet's omnipresent notum being a requirement in transfering of the "soul" to the new body.
In 29033, more than 300 years after it disappeared, the Rimor is located far from its original location. The vessel is brought to a research station, while the remains of the crew are shipped to Omni-1 for examination. A week later, all personnel at the research station disappear. Investigations lead nowhere.
Conflict
After decades of growing unrest, seizing the opportunity when Omni-Tek is engaged in war elsewhere, clans of workers rise against Omni-Tek in 29206. The take control of seventy-five percent of the terraformed land mass on Rubi-Ka before Omni-Tek again turn their full attention to Rubi-Ka.
Omni-Tek launches a major offensive in 29212, wiping out most clan resistance over the next two years. Ten years later, the last clans surrender their equipment, and the clans are granted limited lease of land in return for an end to all future hostilities.
In 29301, thirty-eight nano technicians and meta-physicists leave Omni-Tek and found a neutral colony named "Jobe".
After 150 years of peace, the conflict between Omni-Tek and the clans flare again. Omni-Tek's disregard of pressure from other corporations results in a The Corporate Wars, once again forcing Omni-Tek to focus their military forces off planet. The Council of Truth is formed in 29396, and soon establishes a political hold of the major clans and the nothern territories.
When enemies of Omni-Tek attempt to seize control of notum mining installations on Rubi-Ka, the clans support Omni-Tek in repelling them. The Corporate Wars end in 29442, and the aftermatch results in Omni-Tek's lease for Rubi-Ka being shortened to end in 29550.
In 29458, Omni-Tek make an agreement with the clans about reopening the mines in the north, but after meeting scattered resistance move in to take the mines by force. The third Rubi-Kan civil war ends with a cease-fire after twelve years, and Omni-Tek pull all forces from the northern territories, and abandon all operations in the area.
Opportunities
June 26 29475, after prolonged objections from ICC, Omni-Tek finally lift the restrictions on colonisation, and the population increases fast. Omni-Tek announce a general amnesty, which is acknowledged by the Council of Truth. Omni-Tek and the Council of Truth meet to talk of lasting peace.
Peace talks are suspended after several terrorist attacks and clashes between Omni-Tek forces and military clans. After pressure from several clans, the Council of Truth steps down. Omni-Tek annuls the agreement that ended the third civil war. ICC Peacekeepers make planetfall on September 18 29476.
On November 29 29476 ICC ends Omni-Tek's monopoly on notum mining, and a journalist dubs it the start of the fourth Rubi-Kan civil war - the Notum Wars.
A New World
August 30 29477, Jobe scientists announce they will soon open the portal between Rubi-Ka and "the Shadowlands". Soon reports of visions and projections come from all over Rubi-Ka, speaking of "the portal of ages" and "the eye of darkness." Omni-Tek and clans clash over the rights to access the portal, but in the end both sides share access to the land. The explorers discover vast differences in the landscapes, from the lush fields of Elysium through the frozen Tundra of Penumbra through to the volcanic wastelands of Inferno and finally the Chaos of the Pandemonium.
Eventually a group of brave explorers battled through to the core of Pandemonium and vanquished the Beast, the ultimate protector of the Shadowlands, but with it’s demise came a stark warning, that somewhere in the depths of space something else had noticed the human disturbance in the notum fields, and that something was not intent on letting humans continue to abuse Rubi-Ka’s most precious resource…
The Alien Invasion
The autumn of 29478 saw the start of strange reports filtering in from orbital stations in and around Rubi-Ka. Strange alien vessels appeared in orbit and attempts at communication proved fruitless on the first of September the mysterious invaders launched their first attacks on Rubi-Ka with wave after wave of the invaders assaulting the new cities that citizens had constructed across Rubi-Ka. The alien invasion had begun…
